Toyota portrays itself as a green carmaker, but they make their profits on SUVs, pickups and luxury cars. They are pooling their lobbying efforts with the Detroit 3 to defeat any large increases to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE). We will see if Toyota can maintain the image of a green hybrid car company while at the same time stopping increases to fuel economy.

The Tahoe Hybrid will improve city fuel economy 40% over other Tahoes. GM developed this two mode hybrid system in partnership with the Chrysler Group and BMW. This drivetrain can run on only electric at slow speeds, and on the highway the engine shuts off 4 of its 8 cylinders. The GMC Yukon will also be available as a hybrid.
Some people see a full size SUV as an oxymoron, but making the largest trucks more efficient will help reduce gasoline consumption. People continue to buy full size SUVs despite high gas prices. They may need to tow or carry lots of people, so they keep on buying the vehicles that meet their needs. Giving them an option to improve their fuel economy significantly is a great thing.
The Tahoe Hybrid will be available in the fourth quarter of 2007. GM will be subsidizing the cost of the hybrid system in order to get greater volumes. The hybrid will come well equipped and will not be the most expensive Tahoe model.

The 2008 Cadillac CTS is on its way, it will arrive in late August 2007. I saw this car at the New York Auto show in April, and the photos do not do it justice. In person, the car looks much more expensive than it is. The interior is also world class, which fixes the major criticism of the old CTS.
A new V6 is offered. It is a direct injection that puts out 304 horsepower. All wheel drive is also available for the first time.
Universal praise is coming from the major car magazines. They drove the new CTS around the Nurburging Nordschleife and were blown away by the ride and handling. We will have to wait and see if their tune changes when they do a comparison with a BMW.
